Music by "Los Sencillos"

As in our first two summer tardeadas, this will be a great time to re-connect with the activists of prior generations.  In addition, the perspectives of the well known peace activist Blaze Bonpane are always relevant, especially in times of war.  Blaze was also a key participant in the Catolicos Por La Raza movement in the 1970's, and so was Pedro Arias.  If you were with us last year, you'll remember how much we all enjoyed the entertainment of Los Sencillos

Please see the event flyer for more information.

"Defending Our Youth and Our Workers"  July 17, 2004 - Eventful Tardeada for Richard V. Cruz Scholarship Fund    ... see and print special Flyer for this event

The first six recipients of the Richard V. Cruz " Justice Belongs to the People" Scholarship awards were introduced on this splendid event!  These inspiring law students were awarded either $2,000 or $2,500 each by the Richard V. Cruz Memorial Foundation for their dedication to addressing the legal challenges faced by underserved communities in California.

The theme of this year’s fundraiser was "Defending our youth and our workers."  We felt it would be most appropriate to bring attention to the issues of youth and labor in our community as a way to remember the life of legal advocate, Richard V. Cruz.  The eventful program included:

Spring Scholarship Announcement Tardeada for Richard V. Cruz Scholarship Fund  February 8, 2004  ... see and print special Flyer for this event

It was a wonderful venue in which to announce the Richard V. Cruz “Justice Belongs to the People” Scholarship Program.  Our Scholarship Program supports law students who intend to dedicate their professional lives to the legal challenges faced by underserved residents in the barrios and rural areas of California.

Combining inspirational speakers and a terrific dance band, this was an event to remember.  The speakers included Dolores Huerta, Vice President Emeritus, United Farm Workers of America, Associate Justice Carlos R. Moreno, California Supreme Court, Assistant Supervising Judge Peter Espinoza, Los Angeles Superior Court and
Danilo J. Becerra, Esq., Moreno, Becerra, Guerrero & Casillas.

Everyone enjoyed the live music from LA’s greatest big band, the Gus Ramos Blue Rhythm Jazz Orchestra

Inspired by the insights of Dolores Huerta, the Foundation has decided to officially endorse her continued appointment to a full ten year term as a member of the Board Of Regents of the University Of California.

Payment:       If you missed this event, you can still contribute by credit card by using the donation form.  You can also purchase prints from the Richard V. Cruz Collection of archival documents that were displayed at this event from the Rich Benda Photography website.

Inaugural Fundraiser for Richard V. Cruz Scholarship Fund July 19, 2003

** Thanks to all the devoted participants this event was very successful and a lot of fun!  Over 300 people attended the tardeada and more people contributed to the fundraiser event who could not attend.  See photos of the Inaugural Fundraiser on the Event Photos page.  If you missed this one, we will post our next event in the near future.  Many people are still sending in their checks.  Thanks, again to all of you and especially to Miguel Garcia for being such a great host!

Hosted by Miguel Garcia, a special reunion of many of Richard's old friends and associates to commemorate the decennial year of Richard's death.  Good food, interesting speakers, entertainment and a date not to miss for anyone involved in the Chicano movement of the 60's and 70's.
